Tie-Dye Four Poster Bed Style Curtains

I got this idea becasue, as you can see from the photo, almost half of my bedroom is just bed. My aim was to section off the end of my bedroom so my bed could feel like a whole room.

Using old bed sheets, in total I made three hangings. I only used two in my room in the end because I have a photo wall at the other end.

I used a double flat sheet for the largest sheet down the length of the bed and then cut it in half to make curtains. The other is a double duvet that I cut the back off of. The only thing I bought for this was a tie dye kit off of amazon.

After the curtains in my room turned out so well my friend wanted me to make her some. We also cut up duvets for her curtains. Her bed is a single and mine is a double we cut the sheets smaller to fit the bed; we did this after we dyed it and based it off of measurements.

Tie-Dying;

I chose colours for my room from other decoration in my room. My room gets the afternoon sun so I wanted muted, pale colours like washed out oranges, yellows and red/browns.

Because of the colours I wanted I mixed them myself. I did this by adding a little green and blue powder to the red and mixing this with the yellows and oranges. The best method is using an old pillowcase to test and to play around with the colours until they are what you want. (We did the same when doing the second set of curtains) .

I layed the sheets out on the grass in my garden and sprayed them entirely withe hose. I found the middle and twisted into a spiral then dribbled over the dyes in an asterix motion (equally on each) until half the bottle of dye was gone. Then I repeated the process once more.

Whilst still twisted, I put the hose on a mist setting and sprayed the sheet to make the dye run through the sheet. I unfolded it then twisted it up in the same method making sure the more white areas were on the surface. I then repeated the ‘using half the bottle method’ until the dye had run out.

Finally I unfolded the sheets, let them dry and washed them.

To hang them up ;

You need a friend to help hold the weight of the sheet whilst you nail it to the ceiling. Nail every 1/2 a metre or so to make sure the sheet is secure.

When making the curtains, I hung the whole sheet up then used fabric scissors to cut it in half where I wanted the opening.
I used left over test fabric and some edges that I cut to sew ties for the curtains with buttons.
